| The Federal Government has rebuffed a recommendation to relax regulations surrounding imported used cars.
A Productivity Commission report into Australia's automotive manufacturing industry found "The Australian Government should progressively relax the restriction on the importation of second-hand passenger and light commercial vehicles".
The report recommended changes relating to imported second-hand vehicles should not start until after Australian manufacturers stop building cars, and suggested imported cars must be less than five years old and comply with "vehicle design standards which are consistent with those recognised by Australia".
Such a move would lead to an influx of cheaper second-hand cars that could put pressure on new vehicle distributors. Motorists can currently import vehicles through the Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles Scheme, but those "grey import" cars are subject to strict requirements and do not include models sold in bulk locally.
