The central element in the government’s transport response to alcohol-fuelled violence in central Sydney is proving a flop, with barely a handful of passengers choosing to use new late-night bus services.

In response to concerns about the difficulty of dispersing large crowds from the city late at night, the state government said in December it would run extra bus services between Kings Cross and the city late on Friday and Saturday nights.

But at a budget estimates hearing on Tuesday, the chief executive of government bus operator State Transit, Peter Rowley, confirmed few people were catching the services.
