Mary Nakashiba remembers the precise moment her life changed, more than 70 years ago, just after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour.

She and her family were arrested at their Darwin home, then transported south by ship. After two weeks, the family disembarked in Sydney on a steamy January morning. Clutching the only suitcase she’d been allowed to bring, 15-year-old Mary was accosted by an angry mob as she stepped off the gangplank.

“They were screaming, ‘Kill them! Shoot the bastards!’" says Mary. "I couldn’t believe it – these were Australians, people of my own country. I’ll never forget it. I was in total, utter shock. That was the point that I realised my life would never be the same.”
