| Carbon Dioxide is vilified as one of the biggest threats to the environment. Atmospheric levels are on the rise, and therefore so are average temperatures across the globe. Melting ice sheets are causing “Nuisance flooding,” which will only get worse. Unfortunately, carbon dioxides latest trick is not a mere nuisance. Oceana describes ocean acidification as thus: “acidification refers to the process of the oceans becoming more acidic.” As atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rise, much of it enters the ocean. This makes the ocean a carbon dioxide sink. Once in the ocean, carbon dioxide becomes carbonic acid, and causes a decrease in oceanic pH. As more carbon dioxide enters the ocean there is a decrease in carbonate ions, because the water becomes more saturated with bicarbonate instead. Many oceanic creatures depend on carbonate concentrations, because high bicarbonate concentrations cause the dissolution of calcium carbonate structures, which many animals use as a protective coating including plankton, king crabs, mollusks and just about everything else with a shell.
