| In an act the Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione has described as "an all-time low,'' 11 members of the clergy have been robbed when they left their rooms for World Youth Day activities yesterday.
10 clergy members from the Unites States and one from Papua New Guinea locked their rooms at the Capuchin Franciscan Friars Seminary in Plumpton when they left at 7:30am.
They arrived back to the Jersey Road building from seeing the Pope at midnight last night only to find their rooms ransacked.
A total of $7000 in US and Australian dollars was stolen in the brazen robbery.
Mr Scipione said the significant amount of money was stolen as apart of a calculated break and enter and the thief or thieves had to break into each individual room to get the cash.
"They haven't stolen anything other than cash, so they knew what they were looking for.
"It's a terrible act, to target a Seminary in itself is extroadinarily poor in taste and to know they were targeting members of the clergy, that takes it to an all-time low,'' he said.
The clergy members aged between 21 and 56 mostly came from Denver, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington DC in the US.
Mt Druitt police and a fingerprinting team are investigating the theft.
There have been no other major police incidents across NSW relating to World Youth Day in the last 24 hours.
Anyone who might have witnessed suspicious activity in Jersey Road, Mt Druitt is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. LNK |
