An "idiot" Porsche driver had his car impounded after hitting 154kmh on a busy inner-Melbourne street last night.

Police spotted the speeding sports car after it drove to the right of a tram stop in Lygon Street, Carlton, about 8.30pm.

When the driver was pulled over, it is understood he asked police whether they could have stopped him if he had decided to keep going.

The Carlton speeding incident is one of two last night that police say has left them "stupefied" at driver behaviour.

In Melbourne's south-east, two other drivers were caught travelling along Warrigal Road in Bentleigh East at up to 140kmh about 9pm.

The drivers, a 27-year-old from Clayton South and an 18-year-old from Cheltenham have been interviewed for driving at a speed dangerous.

All the cars were impounded.

Over 5,000 drivers have had their vehicles impounded due to reckless and stupid behaviour since "hoon" legislation was introduced a year ago.

Police say Victoria has not experienced a road death for six days.
