AN ARSENAL of unlicensed weapons including crossbows, luxury vehicles and a quantity of the drug ice were seized yesterday when Victorian police smashed what is alleged to be a large interstate drugs syndicate.
Two NSW men were among four people arrested when drug squad investigators raided four properties, including a mansion, in Melbourne.
The raids followed the seizure of ice of high purity, with an estimated street value of $1.4 million, in Wodonga last month.
Two of the men arrested yesterday were from Victoria. They are alleged to have been the receivers and distributors of the drug, which was allegedly imported from Sydney. The two Sydney men were arrested at Melbourne Airport.
"We believe we have stopped a syndicate and the distribution of ice. We'll be alleging that ice has been distributed in Melbourne and sourced in Sydney," Detective Inspector Doug Fryer said. "The seizures that were done in Wodonga, there were two half-kilo seizures, they were extremely high purity at a street value that would be approximately $1.4 million."
It was not believed the ring had international connections, although Victorian police were working with NSW police, he said.
Investigators seized the vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the weapons - including unlicensed handguns - and a large amount of cash, and arrested a man, 45, at a Greenvale mansion.
A large amount of money was also confiscated after a Glenroy property was raided, while police also raided a reception centre in Somerton, owned by the Greenvale man, and a house in Thomastown.
"We're making a number of inquiries into the assets of the people who have been arrested this morning and those inquiries will continue," Inspector Fryer said.
