Manly Council will consider a proposal to reduce shark netting at Manly beach at its Monday night meeting.

The general manager of Manly City Council, Henry Wong, said the council was open to the idea of finding an alternative to shark netting, but was reliant on state government agencies to provide the expertise to balance public safety and environmental concerns.

“If there is a better alternative to shark meshing, which has been effective until now, the council and community would support it,” he said.

Greens councillor Cathy Griffin will move a motion that Manly Council support the reduction in shark netting from eight to six months a year. She has suggested alternative methods of shark warning systems including sonar technology.
