| Six months after the furious protests ended in Kiev, the commercialization of Ukraine’s Maidan is in full swing
If bags don’t suit you, perhaps try some Putin and Yanukovych-themed toilet paper. The Yanukovych TP is of slightly better quality and costs $1.60, as opposed to a mere $1.20 for the Putin one-ply variant.
“Get your Maidan souvenirs here! Great evening discounts!” the middle-aged man shouted as I passed his stand in Ukraine’s Independence Square. Roughly six months ago, a wave of fierce protests ripped through this plaza, known as Maidan, and forced President Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country. Now, with the battle for the future of Ukraine raging in the east, the forces of capitalism have tried to take advantage of the Maidan brand, even as many of the protesters remain in Independence Square. The items on sale range from darkly funny to frighteningly ultra-nationalist. Both Yanukovych and Russian President Vladimir Putin appear prominently in the merchandise. And Putin, a former KGB man, seems to bear the brunt of the criticism, perhaps because some say he’s arming pro-Moscow rebels in eastern Ukraine.
