A UNION-related superannuation fund was billed more than $93,000 for two and a half days’ work done by a union official, an inquiry has heard.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) appointed John Berger as Tasmania Superannuation Liaison Officer (SLO) with TWU Super - an industry fund covering transport workers - from 2009 to 2012, the Royal Commission into Union Governance and Corruption heard on Wednesday.

Mr Berger, the assistant secretary of the TWU Victoria/Tasmania branch, was appointed as SLO by the union’s then state secretary, Bill Noonan.

Evidence presented to the commission shows Mr Berger spent five days in Tasmania on union and SLO business in the 2011-12 financial year.

Under an agreement with TWU Super, the TWU billed the superannuation fund $93,434 for Mr Berger’s SLO work in 2011-12 - covering half his total $186,868 in salary and expenses.
