Revolutionary new Queensland technology that switches traffic lights from red to green to enable ambulances and fire trucks a clear passage to emergencies will be trialled in Brisbane.

The emergency vehicle priority trial follows a similar test undertaken on the Gold Coast since 2012 that has, in some cases, enabled up to two minutes to be shaved off ambulance response times.

The potentially life-saving technology works by having sensors, installed in emergency vehicles and at intersections, that automatically flick red lights to green as the vehicle approaches allowing it to safely pass through.

Brisbane City Council infrastructure chairman Adrian Schrinner said it meant vehicles could travel from a station to the scene of an emergency without having to stop or slow at a single red light.
