A Romanian using the online moniker "Guccifer" has been indicted in the US on charges of hacking the emails of members of the Bush family and senior cabinet figures.

42-year-old Marcel Lehel Lazar, a former taxi driver, is already in jail in Romania, where he was arrested in January for hacking the emails of many Romanian officials, including the head of the national intelligence service.

The Smoking Gun website reports Lazar intercepted photos that former president George W. Bush emailed to his sister showing paintings he was working on, including self-portraits of him showering and in a bathtub.

A Romanian citizen has been indicted by a US federal grand jury on charges that he, as the hacker "Guccifer," posted data stolen from email and social media accounts of US celebrities and politicians, the US Justice Department said on Thursday.

No mention of his alleged attacks on US citizens were made in the Romanian court last week, and an official at the Romanian general prosecutor's office, who has knowledge of the case but who did not want to be named, told Reuters last week that the office had no knowledge of any US requests for Lehel's extradition.
