| Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford today unveiled specifics of an amendment to the city's curfew violation which, if enforced, will not only tax the parents' pocketbooks but will take away their freedom, at least temporarily.
At a news conference held by leaders of Birmingham's Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the mayor said there will be a mandatory court appearance and $500 fine for the first curfew violation offense.
If the parent or legal guardian can't pay the fine immediately, they will sign a 30-day bond. If the fine isn't paid within that 30-day time frame, the city will move to file a lien against their car tag or driver's license which will not be renewable until the fines are paid, Langford said.
The second offense also calls for a $500 fine. The third will send the parent or legal guardian to jail for six months, in addition to the fine, Langford said.
Langford hopes the new rules are in place by Aug. 1.
"I don't favor curfews, it's not my job to raise someone else's child," Langford said. "But since you won't do it, we're going to give this law some teeth. We aren't playing."
