The debate over whether or not the state should move to ban noncompete clauses grew all the more heated yesterday when House Speaker Robert DeLeo introduced an economic development bill to challenge the one proposed by Governor Deval Patrick.

The bills differ in a number of areas, but perhaps most noticeably in that DeLeo’s bill does not address noncompete clauses, while Patrick’s sought to ban them in most cases.

The debate on whether or not to ban noncompetes has largely focused on the tech sector and issues of innovation. Those for the ban say restricting employees’ ability to move from company to company, or to launch their own startup in the same field as their current employer, ultimately hurts the overall business climate. In the other corner, those supporting noncompetes counter that they allow them to keep insider information out of competitors’ hands.

Anyway, the tech industry’s exciting and all. But we’ve got a big, broad readership that extends well outside it, so we thought we’d tap into it and gauge the perspective beyond Beacon Hill and the tech community.

How do you feel about noncompetes? Vote below and let us know.
