| It's billed as Australia's biggest under 18's event and its slogan is "this school holidays it's time to go wild".
The Submission under-18s dance party at Home nightclub in Sydney's Darling Harbour lived up to its reputation last night, when five teenagers were arrested for assaulting police and drug possession, and a number of drunken girls had to be taken to hospital.
Police were conducting a sniffer-dog drug operation at the event, which attracted 2000 revellers and was advertised as strictly alcohol-free for those aged 15 to 17 only.
At least one of the intoxicated girls who had to be taken to hospital was only 14 years old, say police.
Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and charged after they allegedly assaulted a plain clothes police officer.
Superintendent Ken Finch, from the Central Police Station, said the boys were approached by the police officer before the alleged assault occurred.
"My understanding is the police attention was drawn to them in some way, and then the people were spoken to and it escalated from there,'' he said.
Another two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, were arrested after allegedly being caught with drugs.
A 15-year-old boy was charged with possession of cannabis and ecstasy, while a 17-year-old boy was charged for a "deemed supply'' of ecstasy, which means he was carrying a quantity deemed big enough for supplying others.
James McDougall, the Director of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre, said while he could not comment on this specific incident, the practice of taking sniffer dogs to pubs and clubs was concerning.
"From a human rights perspective the use of sniffer dogs is questionable, the issue of them being used to police children is even more disturbing," he said.
Superintendent Finch said police operations, which were predominantly conducted outside the venue, were based on a risk assessment of the party.
"It was an operation based on the fact that it was an event that we were told had attracted ticket sales of 2000, was an under-age event and was school holidays,'' he said.
He said some police went inside the venue, where they saw a number of teenagers who appeared to be "seriously affected by alcohol and/or drugs,'' he said.
Several other teenagers had to be rushed to city hospitals suffering high levels of intoxication at the party.
Early this morning the area around the popular nightclub was strewn with empty including bourbon and coke cans and champagne bottles.
Two girls, aged 14 and 15, were taken by ambulance to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, while a second girl, 17, was rushed to St Vincents, suspected of suffering a GHB (Gamma hydroxybutyrate) overdose.
The hospital has since confirmed she was not under the influence of illegal drugs but was intoxicated. She has since been released into the care of her parents.
Another 15-year-old boy who was drunk had to be taken home by police.
In a separate incident in the same area, a 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with five different offences, including offensive behaviour, assault, resisting arrest, and custody of a knife.
Police have also received allegations of an alleged sexual assault that may have taken place in the vicinity of the party. The alleged victim is expected to be interviewed by police today with her mother.
