| Subject: Vicious Iranian slave pen sentences UK woman to 20 years' jail over Facebook posts Sat May 31, 2014 9:30 pm | |
| A British woman has been sentenced to up to 20 years’ jail for criticizing the Iranian government on Facebook.
Roya Saberi Negad Nobakht from Stockport, Manchester, was arrested at the airport last October when visiting friends in Shiraz, a city in western Iran.
A source told The Times: “She is not doing well. She is just a housewife and is not an activist.
“She has said she would rather die than be there for 20 years. She has been tortured and the conditions at the prison are terrible. She is under a lot of pressure.”
The Iranian Opposition website Kaleme stated that Nobakht, who has dual British- Iranian nationality, had been sentenced along with seven others for a total of 123 years.
Britain currently has no embassy in Iran, making negotiations difficult. The Swedish embassy is being used as a go-between for the authorities to discuss the case.
Nobakth was, according to a copy of her charge seen by The Independent, accused of “gathering and participating with intent to commit crime against national security” and “insulting Islamic sanctities”.
The woman’s family, however, is seeking clarification on the court ruling, since there has been multiple sentencing and the ruling has not been put down in writing.
The ruling has yet to be officially confirmed.
Iran has recently been criticized for its restriction of internet freedoms. Facebook and many other websites are considered un-Islamic and immoral by authorities.
Six young Iranians were arrested last week for posting a video online which showed them dancing to ‘Happy’ by US singer Pharrell Williams.
