Members of Generation Y are struggling to cope with the transition to adulthood as they face rising education costs, unaffordable housing and a lacklustre jobs market.

A University of Queensland survey of 700 students found that half of them were showing signs of anxiety, depression and stress.

''This is a very high level of stress and anxiety … which suggests young people are not coping with the extended transition [from] adolescence to adulthood,'' researcher Megan Weier said. ''It's unfair to make the assumption they're having the time of their lives.''

Asked what made them feel like a non-adult, the 18- to 29-year-olds nominated working casually, being financially dependent on their parents and still studying. These pressures are likely to be exacerbated by the budget changes that will result in funding for university degrees being slashed and a six-month wait to receive unemployment benefits.
