| Subject: Destructive statists: Huge stockpile of valuable seized ivory to be destroyed Sat May 17, 2014 9:57 pm | |
| The biggest incineration of elephant ivory in history has begun in Hong Kong.
The elephant tusks were part of a record seizure of illegal ivory discovered hidden in cargo earlier this year.
Customs officials believe the ivory was bound for markets in China, south-east Asia and Australia to be made into jewellery and furniture.
Despite the ivory trade being banned in 1989 it is estimated 35,000 elephants are killed for their tusks every year.
Hong Kong is the gateway to China, but it is also the major transit point for the illegal ivory trade in Asia.
This year customs officials made their largest-ever seizures of illegal ivory, bound for Asian destinations, primarily China, to be turned in to trinkets, carvings and jewelry.
