| Subject: Qatar slave pen: labour reforms fail to ease concern over working conditions Thu May 15, 2014 3:59 am | |
| Hundreds of workers have died in the gas-rich state, amid reports, denied by the government, that the fatalities were caused by poor conditions. The government said it would “abolish” the sponsorship system, kafala, which is blamed for granting employers excessive control over their staff: critics say, in effect, it creates a system of bonded labour. Doha said exit permits – formerly approved by employers – would be granted automatically by the interior ministry, with a 72-hour grace period for employers to object.
