| Subject: Thank the statists: Anti-austerity demo turns violent in Rome Mon Apr 14, 2014 5:56 am | |
| In the Italian capital Rome, thousands of people have marched in protest against the EU policies of austerity and those of their own leftist government. The protesters called for better work conditions, affordable housing, and improved conditions for refugees. The demonstration turned violent at some points.
On Saturday, more than 20-thousand people staged an anti-EU, anti-government rally in central Rome.
Italy is struggling to shake off a two-year recession that has pushed unemployment to 13 percent, the highest in 37 years. The demonstration came at the time when the Italian parliament is discussing a labor-market reform bill. Protesters fear that the bill will make it even harder for them to get a job. Protesters have flowed into the rally from all over Italy. Environmentalists, pacifists, students and immigrants: Italians and non-Italians from all walks of life have chanted slogans against the EU austerity policies and demonstrated against job insecurity, housing difficulties, government cuts and lack of civil rights in Italy. Protesters were also calling for improved conditions for immigrants and refugees, with many of them being forced to live in a twilight zone of semi-legality. Confrontations erupted by the end of the day. Confrontations erupted by the end of the day. Following the clashes between police and protesters near the Ministry of Labor, nearly 100 people were injured.
