Girl Talk’ is the UK’s oldest magazine for young girls and they’ve just announced that they’re going “feminist.” The move followed a survey by the magazine in which readers, who are aged between 7 and 12, were asked how they would like to be described. The top answer was “pretty”, a finding that shocked editor Bea Appleby.

In an op-ed article for the Telegraph, Appleby stated that although ‘Girl Talk’ has always tried to “stop girls growing up too quickly” and protect readers from “sex and boys,” the “hyper-sexualisation of pop and TV stars” has crept into the magazine. “Most of our readers’ favourite stars are very sexual,” writes Appleby.

Appleby has vowed to “take some responsibility,” for readers attitudes. “We had to accept that we’re the ones feeding them the celebrities they admire. We had to show more than pop stars, hairstyles and kittens. We had to inspire them to have confidence, ambitions worthy of their potential and a sense of their rights,” she explains.
