| Just under eight months from the midterm elections, Americans say that "unemployment, the economy in general, and dissatisfaction with government" are the nation's most important problems, according to a new Gallup survey. The result is generally consistent with recent polling on the question.
When asked an open-ended question about what are the most important problem facing the country today is, 19 percent of respondents say unemployment or jobs. Eighteen percent cite dissatisfaction with government, and 17 percent say the economy generally. Health care comes in fourth, with 11 percent. Income inequality, which President Obama has described as “the defining issue of our time,” was cited by just 3 percent of respondents.
In separate surveys, Gallup also found that Americans “worry” most about the economy, federal spending, and health care. “Together, these findings confirm that regardless of how the question is asked, the economy and government are the issues that most concern Americans today,” said Gallup’s Rebecca Riffkin.
While international issues may generate headlines, they are, according to Riffkin, "currently not major concerns for most Americans."
The survey of 1,048 American adults was conducted March 6-9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
