SIMCOE, Canada: Man dies after being electrocuted by pigs with taser

Canadian investigators are looking into the death of a man who collapsed after being subdued with a taser in a confrontation with police.

A taser is a weapon that is used to shock or stun fleeing or belligerent suspects. It had been considered less lethal than conventional guns, but its use has become controversial because of reports that tasers have caused injury or death.

John Yoannou, spokesman for Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, said today investigators were looking at a case involving Jeffrey Mark Marreel.

He said provincial police officers responding to a call about man causing a disturbance on Monday confronted Marreel. A taser was used to subdue him, and he was taken into custody.

Marreel was transported to the Simcoe, Ontario, provincial police station, where he collapsed, the SIU said. The 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Yoannou said an autopsy would be conducted.

It was the 21st fatality in Canada involving the use of the high-voltage weapons.

And it came just days after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced plans to restrict taser use.

The federal police agency said last week that officers will have clearer direction on how and when the powerful weapons are wielded as soon as possible, following renewed calls for action by the RCMP complaints commission.

However, Rick Bartolucci, minister of community safety and correctional services, said Tuesday that the province will not be calling for a moratorium on taser use despite demands from human rights groups.

"Ontario has a very, very measured approach to the use of tasers," said Bartolucci. He said a report on the use of tasers was scheduled to be released in December.

The victim's father, Noel Marreel, said today that his son had a drug problem and recently lost his job and broken up with his girlfriend.

"He was on a down cycle," Noel Marreel said.
