| Swedish disco-pants pioneers Abba say the country's tax laws are to blame for their flamboyant attire.
The sequinned jumpsuits and platform shoes were not merely a fad of the 1970s, Björn Ulvaeus wrote in "Abba: The Official Photo Book", published to mark 40 years since they won Eurovision with Waterloo and featuring scores of intimate, never-before-seen pictures.
According to Ulvaeus Swedish laws allow businesses to deduce the cost of clothing against tax - as long as they were too outrageous to be worn out on the streets.
"In my honest opinion we looked like nuts in those years," he wrote. "Nobody can have been as badly dressed on stage as we were."
Ulvaeus also poured cold water on rumours of a possible Abba reunion, saying: 'If any one of us has opened the door a crack, I'm shutting it now.'
