| Subject: Hundreds died while waiting for elective surgery in OZschwitz statist hospitals in 2013, FOI reveals Thu Feb 13, 2014 8:46 pm | |
| MORE than 650 people died waiting for elective surgery in Melbourne hospitals last year.
Data obtained under Freedom of Information legislation revealed the number of people who died while waiting for elective surgery at Melbourne metro hospitals had jumped from 572 in 2012 to 651 last year.
Monash Health healthcare service had the most deaths among patients on waiting lists, with 150 deaths last year, followed by Alfred Health with 76 deaths.
Opposition health spokesman Gavin Jennings said waiting times were becoming worse.
In September last year there were 40,133 people on waiting lists across Melbourne hospitals and 48,363 across the state.
There were 3054 people on the waiting list for surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and 2316 at Dandenong Hospital during this period.
“(Health Minister) David Davis has let the state’s surgery waiting list blow out to 50,000 people waiting in pain, and sadly more people are dying as a result,” Mr Jennings said.
“The Premier (Denis Napthine) must sack David Davis now — he is the worst Health Minister in the state’s history.”
Australian Medical Association Victoria president Dr Stephen Parnis said elective surgery lists were growing.
