The Australian Taxation office has been accused of a campaign of intimidation using threatening letters on tens of thousands of tardy taxpayers.

Lobby group Taxpayers Australia says the ATO has threatened individual taxpayers with massive fines, that cannot be legally enforced, for late lodgement of tax returns.

The group cited one example of a letter sent to a teenager who was 15 years old, and not working for the period that the ATO was demanding he submit a return.

The Tax office says 70,000 letters were sent to taxpayers, including wealthy Australians and their companies, asking them to get up-to-date with their tax affairs.
