A lifelike sculpture of a man sleepwalking in his underpants has created a nightmare for some students at an all-girls college in the US.

So realistic is the sculpture of the nearly naked man, which stands with arms outstretched at a busy thoroughfare at the private Wellesley College west of Boston, that startled students have mistaken it to be a real person stumbling through the snow.

Motorists reportedly have been slamming on their brakes as they approach and pass the 175-centimetre fibreglass and epoxy sculpture, entitled Sleepwalker and installed on the campus as part of an art exhibition at the college's museum.
