| From the day he arrived in Australia, Mohib Alami felt he belonged. On Sunday, along with his parents and younger brother, he embraced his new home to become an Australian citizen.
The four members of the Alami family were among those who pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people at an Australia Day ceremony at the Ryde Civic Hall. Their citizenship was sealed in the traditional way, with the presentation of native seedlings and consumption of lamingtons.
Like so many others, the Alami family came to Australia seeking a better life and opportunities for their children. Saeed Alam Alami, a former doctor, and his wife Nafisa, a former teacher, left Afghanistan after conflict broke out, taking their children to Pakistan to ensure they had an education.
