| The Northern Territory government has warned motoring enthusiasts to control their behaviour when speed limits are abolished on a section of outback highway next week.
A 200 kilometre patch of the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs will have its speed limits derestricted from February 1, the first step in a new 12-month "evidence-based" trial which could permanently restore unlimited zones on sections of territory roads.
Open speed limits were scrapped in 2007 and replaced with a 130km/h limit, in return for an increase in Commonwealth funding. From that time until 2012, more people died on Northern Territory roads (307) than in the six years before the change (292).
The Country Liberal Party promised a review of the capped speed limit before the 2012 election, which it won.
