Australia's Defence chief has hit back at claims that Navy personnel have mistreated asylum seekers.

Three asylum seekers who were on a boat reported to have been turned back this week have said they were mistreated by Australian border protection personnel.

Abdullah Ahmed from Eritrea told Fairfax Media he was kicked on his left thigh. Bashka Ibrahim Nooris and Ahmed Ali Noor, from Somalia, said they had been made to put their hands on the boat's muffler, which was hot.

Rote Island police chief Hidayat told Fairfax Media said: "We did see burn injuries on their palm."

The ABC has also reported claims from two asylum seekers who say they were subjected to rough handling by Australian authorities.

On Thursday afternoon, Defence chief David Hurley released a statement rejecting the claims.

"In my view, our Navy, Army and Air Force personnel conduct themselves in a humane and considerate manner that is a credit to them and to the Australian Defence Force,"General Hurley said.
