76 Suspects Arrested In Latest Sting

CHICAGO (CBS) ― They're listed as "erotic services" on the popular Web site Craigslist, but Cook County sheriff's police say they're mostly a front for prostitution, and officers moved in, making 76 arrests.

For the last two years, the sheriff's department has been targeting online prostitution, and Craigslist in particular. The site carries more than 200 categories of classified ads, including erotic services.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports it's not the first time that people posting on Craigslist have been targeted in a sting.

Cook County Sheriff's Office undercover video shows officers giving alleged prostitutes money in exchange for promised sex acts after arranging meetings via Craigslist. In some cases officers posed as johns, in others, as prostitutes.

Sheriff Tom Dart says he's not surprised by the dozens of arrests his latest sting netted.

"If we had the resources, we could make these arrests every minute of the day," Dart said.

One thing that did surprise Dart during this latest sting: on two occasions alleged prostitutes brought their children with them to the hotel.

Dart says after four Craigslist stings in the past year and a half, there is little he hasn't seen, including child prostitution.

He says repeated attempts to have the Web site police itself and shut down the "erotic services" section have failed.

"It's just abundantly clear they don't care," Dart said.

Dart says a public boycott of Craigslist might be the only way to make company officials rethink their current policies.

Until then, Dart believes the online solicitation of prostitution will continue, but he has a warning for anyone considering it.

"You're rolling the dice because the ad you might be answering might be us," he said.

Dart says currently his office is looking into legal action against Craigslist, possibly in the form of a criminal or civil lawsuit.

In addition to that, Dart says his office may also start posting the pictures of offenders on its Web site.
