The heartbreaking stories told by family and friends of Australian soldiers who never returned from their mission in Afghanistan, documented so movingly in the Fairfax video series The Fallen, speak powerfully to our national sense of loss in that conflict.

The 40 killed, the 261 wounded, the billions of dollars expended, have been a high price to pay for a war in which Australia's national interests were never clearly articulated by our politicians.

Nor has this engagement run its course. The Abbott government, acting on plans mapped out by the previous Labor administration, is closing down the forward base at Tarin Kowt and pulling back our much diminished deployment to the more secure environments of Kabul and the multinational base at Kandahar. But there will still be 400 Australian troops remaining in Afghanistan through next year, including a small number of special forces.

They will continue to train the Afghan National Army, upon which the West has pinned its hopes that Afghanistan will never again succour an Osama bin Laden.
