| A senior NSW Health official encouraged his staff to ''go for the jugular'' in an attack on an academic who publicly disagreed with the official government explanation for the Sydney Water tainted tap water scandal.
Professor Wayne Smith, the director of Environmental Health, made the comment in an internal email about Macquarie University's Chris McRae, a chemistry expert, who believed there was a different cause for the contaminated tap water last December that left residents in the Botany area who drank it vomiting, gagging and dizzy.
Documents obtained by Fairfax Media have revealed that after Dr McRae's expert opinion was reported by this newspaper in revealing the tap water scandal, Professor Smith wrote to him and his university heads accusing him of causing unnecessary public anxiety.
