Drink drive offenders will be required to pass an alcohol breath test before they are allowed to drive their cars.

Roads and Ports Minister Duncan Gay has announced alcohol interlocks will be mandatory for high range and repeat drink drive offenders.

The alcohol interlock is an electronic device connected to the ignition of a vehicle which prevents it from starting if the driver has been drinking.

Legislation will be introduced into Parliament next year to make the interlocks mandatory and to impose extra penalties for drivers who exceed their demerit point limit.

The decision to is in response to recommendations by the NRMA.
