Police in London temporarily fried a trainee chef with a stun gun after he threatened to kill himself with a kitchen knife at one of the world's leading cookery schools, they said on Thursday.

Officers used the high-voltage Taser weapon on a 28-year-old man after a three-and-a-half hour stand-off at Le Cordon Bleu school, apparently after he failed his intermediate level exams and wanted to resit them.

The London's Evening Standard newspaper quoted a "sauce" as saying the man is thought to have spent £4000 ($8170) on learning to cook classic and regional French dishes.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement they were called to reports of "a man armed with a knife threatening to self harm at a commercial premises".

"Local officers attended and contained the 28-year-old male, who was alone, at the premises. Armed officers were called as a precaution and a negotiator also attended and spoke to the male.

"Territorial support group officers entered the building at 8.55pm on Wednesday (0555 AEST Thursday) and the man was tasered and arrested. It is thought he had failed a training course."

The man was not injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Le Cordon Bleu - French for blue ribbon, and referring to a grand chef - was founded as a "culinary arts school" in Paris in 1895 and has since gained an international reputation, with 29 schools around the world teaching more than 20,000 students per year.

Courses can cost up to £20,000 and students are taught by master chefs, many of whom come from Michelin-starred restaurants.
