| Subject: UK: Murky world of murdered corrupt policewoman emerges Thu Jun 05, 2008 6:46 pm | |
| A police special constable murdered by her husband in the UK had reportedly helped him run a brothel and used her position to collect debts from clients.
The murder of Nisha Patel-Nasri, 29, has been the subject of intense reporting in the British press and around the world before and after the murder conviction of her husband, Fadi Nasri, at London's Old Bailey last week.
A jury convicted him of the murder after hearing he paid two hitmen £18,000 ($37,000) to kill his wife so he could claim her £350,000 ($723,200) life insurance and start a new life with Lithuanian prostitute Laura Mockiene.
Following the verdict, London's Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair lauded the dead officer, saying: "It is a tragedy that a young woman who willingly gave up so much of her valuable free time to work as a police officer in her local community lost her life in this awful way."
But a less-than-wholesome picture has begun to emerge of the special constable's private life.
The Daily Mail in the UK reports that police files show Mrs Patel-Nasri and Nasri went to the home of one brothel client to recoup a £700 ($1450) debt.
The paper also reports that Mrs Patel-Nasri flashed her police-issue warrant card while there and claimed to be on official business.
Another officer reportedly informed Metropolitan Police anti-corruption officers about the matter and detectives investigating Mrs Patel-Nasri's death were also aware of it.
Dave Eden, of Hertfordshire Police, was quoted as saying he had responded to a call from an escort agency client in Elstree, north-west London, in 2003.
The client reportedly told the officer Mrs Patel-Nasri, Nasri and others had tried to force their way into his house.
Sgt Eden reported that when he arrived, Mrs Patel-Nasri told him she had only used her warrant card as identification.
His statement made after the woman's death reportedly said: "She was very aggressive. She told me that I had no idea who I was f---ing dealing with - that I was a county force sergeant and her powerful friends at Scotland Yard could have me out of a job.
"She advised me that my officers and I withdraw from the scene and allow them to get on with their business if I knew what was good for me."
The incident was investigated but Scotland Yard concluded no crime had been committed and Mrs Patel-Nasri was only verbally warned for 'using her warrant card for enforcing civil debts', the paper reported.
Mrs Patel-Nasri, who became a special constable with the Metropolitan Police in late 2002, was fatally stabbed on the doorstep of her Wembley home in North London in May 2006.
Drug dealer Roger Leslie, who arranged the killing, and Jason Jones, who wielded the knife, were convicted of the murder along with Nasri, 34.
The Daily Mail also reported that a prostitute working for the escort agency Seventh Heaven, which was run by Nasri, told detectives that Mrs Patel-Nasri had helped run the business and drove sex workers to and from jobs.
The prostitute, Maria Brennan, was quoted as saying: "Nisha used to ring me up all the time and tell me I had to work, otherwise I was losing her money . . .
"I was aware Nisha had apparently used her police badge to recover debts and I was aware of [Nasri] being violent towards clients."
Commander Rod Jarman, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "The reputation Nisha had with friends, colleagues and family is one of a hard-working, loving individual who gave her time for the good of the community and it is this I believe should be remembered."
