NSW detectives are being investigated over their links with one of Australia's top punters, who is suspected of using police to run secret gambling accounts.

Fairfax Media can reveal the Police Integrity Commission is probing flamboyant Sydney identity Stephen Fletcher's association with a number of NSW detectives, including a homicide squad officer whose offices were recently raided by investigators.

The revelation of the inquiry by the PIC - which has the power to tap phones and hold public inquiries - will again cast a shadow over the racing industry. It involves allegations of well-placed insiders, including jockeys, trading information not available to the public and controversial ''betting to lose'' markets.

Fairfax Media has separately discovered an associate of Mr Fletcher, Ben Joyner, has for several years spruiked his ability to obtain inside information from jockeys. Before the running of the now infamous All Aged Stakes, he claimed to have inside mail on the Gai Waterhouse-trained horse More Joyous.
