| Subject: Pressure gets to Manning: 'I'm sorry that I hurt the United States' Wed Aug 14, 2013 5:12 pm | |
| Speaking for the first time in his court-martial, Pfc. Bradley E. Manning apologized that his decision to leak thousands of secret documents hurt the United States and told an Army judge Wednesday that he was "dealing with a lot of issues" at the time.
Facing Army Col. Denise Lind — who is hearing the case without a jury — and reading from a statement he held in his hand, the 25-year-old Manning spoke for three minutes.
"I'm sorry that my actions hurt people. I'm sorry that I hurt the United States," Manning said in the unsworn statement, which meant he did not face cross examination from prosecutors. "At the time of my decisions, I was dealing with a lot of issues."
