Idiots: Students for Liberty -- The Libertarian Case for a Survival Lottery

The lottery would work along these lines:

When two or more people require life-saving organ transplants, a Social Security Number would be randomly generated by a computer. The individual assigned to that SSN would be required to show up at the nearest hospital and have her organs harvested. These organs would be used to save the 2 or more individuals needing them, for a net total of 1 or more lives saved.

An example would be a situation in which five people need organs. One needs a heart, one needs a kidney, another needs a liver, one needs a pancreas, and one needs a lung. A number is called and somebody with healthy-enough organs of each type is selected (the standard for “healthy-enough” would have to be determined by medical professionals and bioethicists, and would likely be an arbitrary standard of a given number of Quality Adjusted Life Years which would be reaped from each organ for each recipient). This individual is anesthetized and each organ is placed in transport care and delivered to each of the five individuals in need for an organ. A total of four lives are saved which would have otherwise not been saved.
