| Subject: OZschwitz slave pen, where they sacrifice humans to animals: Running over of a Tasmanian devil will attract a fine of $48,000 Tue Aug 06, 2013 1:38 am | |
| A second mine has been approved by Environment Minister Mark Butler in Tasmania's Tarkine wilderness, dealing conservationists a fresh blow on the first day of the federal election campaign.
The decision gives the go-ahead for Venture Minerals' iron ore mine near Tullah, which will operate for two years subject to conditions to limit threats for endangered species.
For company trucks, a maximum of two deaths a year will be tolerated - any subsequent running over of a Tasmanian devil will attract a fine of $48,000.
Mining has become a significant issue in the Labor-held Tasmanian seat of Braddon - a Coalition target at the federal poll - which has high unemployment rates. The Australian Workers' Union has campaigned prominently for more mining jobs in Tasmania. Advertisement
Conditions include limiting truck traffic to daylight hours and having employees being driven in and out of the site in buses, to avoid the devils being run over. The company will also have to contribute another $144,000 towards maintaining an ''insurance population'' of devils. Other conditions have been put in place for the spotted-tail quoll, wedge-tailed eagles and Tasmanian azure kingfishers.
