| The government had “no choice” but to pass on a $57,000 pay rise to MPs after being told its current policy was unlawful, the LNP says.
But the Queensland Council of Unions has questioned why the government didn't make the necessary legislative changes to overturn the law. Acting premier Jeff Seeney, said “that was an issue for the parliament” and the government had done what it could to lessen the blow by finding a “cost neutral” decision. The pay rise, which will bring the Queensland parliament in line with the wages set by the independent statutory authority which determines parliamentarian wages, will be funded by a 50 per cent cut to the public funding to electoral parties, as well as a similar cut to MP electoral allowances. Advertisement The cut to public funding to political parties is not expected to be the only change in this area, with the government review into the Electoral Act expected to be handed down in the next few days.
