errafugia has debuted a concept car called the Transition TF-X, notable for the fact that it’s a FLYING car. The vehicle is still two years away from going on sale, at which time anyone with a spare three hundred grand can place their order. The company nonchalantly describes the TF-X as a “four-seat, plug-in hybrid electric car” – sounds like a Chevy Volt so far – “with fly-by-wire vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.” And there’s the sound of the future arriving. Images of the vehicle thus far look fairly similar to the flying Delorean at the end of Back To The Future, minus the Mr. Fusion of course.

Avery Brooks once famously expressed his disappointment with the arrival of the twenty-first century by decrying the lack of flying cars. “I was promised flying cars,” he complained in an ad. It turns out he was merely asking the question fifteen yeas too early, if Terrafugia is indeed able to follow through in bringing its Transition to market. The more burdensome question is what happens when all these flying cars arrive. Currently air travel is regulated by the FAA and requires a pilot’s license. The price of the TF-X points to it initially being merely a hobbyist toy for rich people akin to two-seater airplanes anyway, so the few who can afford to buy one may simply have to go take their flying lessons.

But if this is the start of an era in which flying cars ultimately become affordable and therefore commonplace, society and governments will have to deal with what happens when suddenly everyone wants a pilot’s license and their own airspace. Back To The Future depicted highways in the sky where flying cars manage to avoid traffic or red lights by flying on different levels of roads, so perhaps there’s a way to regulate such air travel when the time comes. For that matter the movie depicted flying cars becoming a reality in 2015, the same year in which Terrafugia says it’ll begin its Transition TF-X.
