More Victorians died of prescription drug overdoses last year than in road accidents, new figures show.

Figures released by the Coroner's Court on Monday show that prescription drugs contributed to the deaths of 304 Victorians in 2012, up 13 per cent from 270 in 2011.

A total of 282 people died on Victoria's roads last year.

Overall, drug overdoses caused the deaths of 367 Victorians last year, with some deaths caused by a combination of prescription and illicit drugs. Illicit drugs were a factor in 131 deaths.

Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association executive officer Sam Biondo said the figures, presented at a Yarra Drug and Health Forum event, were alarming.

''In the last three years a total of 1061 people have died [of drug overdoses] and it's increasing each year,'' he said. ''Just like the road toll, we need a comprehensive strategy to reduce these figures at a national and state level.''
