| Ivy League Prof Accused of Bludgeoning Wife
An Ivy League professor faces murder charges in the Christmastime beating death of his estranged wife.
Inside a suburban home near Philadelphia, just three days before Christmas, Ellen Robb was wrapping presents at the kitchen table when she was bludgeoned to death.
Police say she was beaten so badly, she was unrecognizable.
Rafael Robb, a tenured economics professor at University of Pennsylvania, is accused of murdering his wife.
"In my 22 years on the force, I have never seen a beating of this severity," said Bruce Castor, the district attorney in Montgomery County, Pa. "This is totally off the charts."
Robb's husband, Rafael Robb, a tenured economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, was charged Monday with first- and third-degree murder as well as evidence tampering, lying to authorities, and a weapons charge.
He has denied killing his wife.
Rafael Robb's attorney, Francis Genovese, said he was surprised that the arrest warrant was largely based on circumstantial evidence.
"I was expecting I would see more hard evidence -- maybe forensic evidence -- come before pointing to Dr. Robb as the killer," Genovese said before Rafael Robb's arraignment.
Divorce a Possible Motive
Police say the professor raised suspicions when he first called to report his wife had been bludgeoned to death.
"We all thought she was shot and how could he know that unless he was the one who made her that way," Castor said.
Police also believe he had a motive. Friends say Ellen Robb wanted a divorce and was expecting $4,000 per month in spousal support.
Police have yet to find a murder weapon. They believe it was a blunt, metal object like a crowbar.
Rafael Robb is currently in custody and is being held without bail.
