| Parents would face on-the-spot fines for failing to send their children to school under a Tony Abbott-led Coalition government.
The Opposition Leader has vowed to scrap the quarantining of welfare payments to fight truancy, particularly in remote Aboriginal communities.
Instead, an Abbott government would deploy local truancy officers to issue fines to parents who fail to get their children into the classroom.
''I support quarantining welfare payments for the long-term unemployed, but it's always struck me as a very cumbersome way to enforce school attendance,'' Mr Abbott said in a speech to the Sydney Institute on Friday night on Aboriginal affairs.
