| Subject: While under statist management, 6 Hanford tanks are leaking nuclear waste Fri Feb 22, 2013 6:24 pm | |
| Gov. Jay Inslee, in a conference call with reporters Friday, said six underground tanks at Hanford nuclear reservation are leaking.
Inslee is in Washington, D.C., this weekend for a meeting with Energy Secretary Steven Chu and a meeting with other governors at the White House.
Inslee said he was told there is no immediate safety threat from the leaks.
Last Friday, it was announced that a single-shell tank at Hanford was leaking up to 300 gallons a year of radioactive liquids. That disclosure raises broader questions about the integrity of more than 140 other tanks holding tens of millions of gallons of waste left over from decades of processing nuclear materials at the federal site in southeast Washington.
The leaks represent the latest setback in a long-troubled effort to clean a site that ranks as one of the planet’s most contaminated places, according to a 2008 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.
