| A man has been killed and a police officer shot in the leg during a gun battle on one of Melbourne's busiest streets.
The man was shot dead by police on Kings Way, just outside the city, shortly before midnight during a confrontation in which witnesses said they heard at least six shots fired. Two other men were arrested as a result of the incident.
An ambulance arrived at the scene early this morning, but the man is believed to have died before it got there. It left as police secured the crime scene and diverted traffic.
The officer, from Prahran police station, was shot in the back of the leg and taken to The Alfred hospital with what police said were "minor injuries". An ambulance spokesman said he was in a stable condition.
Police said the shooting took place after they "intercepted" a man on Kings Way.
A taxi driver who saw the incident, John Sulaj, said he stopped at a red light at the intersection of Kings Way and Moray Street and saw a tall man with a white top and dark hair running across the road being pursued by police.
"Cops were screaming at him. He lifted his hand and started shooting. It was going 'bang, bang, bang'."
He said his passenger told him to "hit the deck" but said he could not because he was stuck behind the steering wheel. "I thought 'why aren't they grabbing him'?
"But I didn't realise the severity of the situation. I didn't realise he had a gun. Geez, if I'd realised that, I would have run the lights. You think you're going to cop a bullet."
His passenger, Age journalist Bruce Kaplan, said he counted "at least six shots". He said police cried out "Stop, stop, stop" as the man ran away from them. "He then pulled a gun and shots started firing. It was scary."
Police said that as well as uniformed officers, the scene was attended by the police helicopter, the dog squad and the Force Response Unit, including negotiators.
