| A federal judge ruled Thursday that a man who killed two cops on Staten Island can face the death penalty for his crimes.
Ronell Wilson's fate will now be in the hands of a new federal jury.
His lawyers argued that his IQ is too low for him to be put to death, but Judge Nicholas Garaufis said Wilson is not mentally retarded and execution can be considered.
Michael Palladino, the head of the Detectives' Endowment Association, applauded the ruling.
"I think the defense of not being competent to stand for the death penalty was just a futile attempt to get around another penalty phase," Palladino said.
Wilson was convicted of killing NYPD detectives Rodney Andrews and James Nemorin in 2003.
He was originally sentenced to death, but that sentence was thrown out because of an error by the prosecutor.
Earlier this week, federal correctional officer Nancy Gonzalez was charged with unlawful sexual abuse for allegedly having sex with Wilson.
Gonzalez is pregnant, and sources say the baby is Wilson's.
