| If you are caught touching your phone to check the date, turning the volume down or switching it off while behind the wheel of a car, you are likely to be fined $250, regardless of whether you are at a traffic light, or not making a call.
A Perth woman was surprised to find this out firsthand on Monday.
She was shocked to be fined for removing her mobile phone from her pocket while stopped at a red light in the city.
Mother of two, Wendy Woodgate said she had placed her phone in her back pocket before hopping in her car to drop one of her sons off at school and then head into the city. Advertisement
While at a red light on William Street, the phone was starting to become uncomfortable and a distraction, according to Mrs Woodgate, so while her car was stationary, she took the the phone out of her pocket and place it in the centre console.
"The process took all of two seconds," she said.
