Everyone had a great time at the law term dinner at Parliament House on Wednesday night. After Cardinal Pell blessed the feast and turned the bread rolls into the body of god, the revelries got under way.

The Chief Justice of NSW, as is the tradition on these occasions, was the keynote speaker. The time-honoured themes are delays, costs, and access to justice.

Chief Justice Bathurst gave us an indication that he and his judges are right on to the problems and he made some fearless forecasts: ''Access to justice for middle-income earners remains horrendously expensive. Without giving my predictions away, I can say that the courts will focus in the next 20 years on developing a culture to alleviate those problems.''

Alleviation in 20 years sent a ripple of awe through the room of lawyers, judges and other bigwigs.
